A mistake in remembering Diogo Jota

The football world fell silent in memory of the deceased star.

A moment of silence was held before the match between Belgium and Italy at the European Women’s Football Championship. The reason for the silence was the death of footballer Diogo Jota.

At the Stade de Tourbillon, players and fans held a minute’s silence to honor the Portuguese star.

For Belgium, the moment of silence caused confusion. The team appeared to still be in the ring on the sidelines when the moment of silence began. Quickly afterwards, the players ran into a line near the center circle to pay their respects to Jota.

Jota died in a traffic accident in the province of Zamora in northwestern Spain early on Wednesday night. Jota’s younger brother André also died in the accident.

The Spanish newspaper AS reported that, based on an initial police investigation, it is believed that the vehicle suffered a flat tire while trying to overtake another vehicle.

Jota had married Rute Cardoso just 10 days before his death. Jota and Cardoso have three children.

Jotta has played for Liverpool since 2020. He joined the English club from Wolves for a transfer fee of 45 million euros. He represented Atlético Madrid and FC Porto during his career.

Last season, Jota played 26 games, 14 of which were in the starting lineup. The season was overshadowed by a muscle injury, which resulted in the Portuguese being sidelined for a month and a half.
