Construction of the Vantaa tram has begun

Construction work will affect train traffic through Tikkurila from June to December.

Preparatory work for the Vantaa tram began after midnight on Monday at Tikkurila station.

Destia’s project manager Pekka Kivelä says that the work will create the conditions for the project to stay on schedule.

The Vantaa tram is scheduled to be completed in 2029 and run from Mellunmäki in Helsinki to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport.

Preparatory work for the Vantaa tram began after midnight on Monday at Tikkurila station.

Destia’s project manager Pekka Kivelä, who is responsible for the western section of the Vantaa tram project, says that work has started well.

“The preparatory work will create the conditions so that when the project starts in the autumn, we have the prerequisites to stay on schedule.”

At this stage, rail bridges will be built for long-distance and commuter trains so that the tram construction site does not interfere with train traffic.

Construction work will affect the departure tracks of trains at Tikkurila station. First, tracks 5 and 6 will be out of service for a couple of weeks.

The track closures will be implemented in four stages, and later other tracks will also be temporarily out of service.

The works will affect train traffic passing through Tikkurila from June to December 2025. K, I and P trains will run less frequently for five weeks in the summer between 23 June and 27 July.

After the construction of the railway bridges, the construction of the actual tram tunnel will begin in the autumn.

The construction of the tunnel to Tikkurila station will take three years.

Some of the construction work causes noise and noisy work is sometimes carried out at night.

Works that cause noise include, for example, the installation of sheet pile walls and bored pile driving.

“A large part of the time is work that is interpreted as noisy work,” Kivelä says.

The Vantaa tram project has been discussed several times in the city council.

Last May, an extraordinary city council meeting was held on the topic of the tram, where supporters of the tram once again defeated opponents of the tram. The opponents would have liked to postpone the project until a more financially favorable time.

The alliance model has been chosen as the implementation model for the Vantaa tramway.

In the project plan approved two years ago, the total costs of 606 million euros would be divided so that Vantaa’s share would be 414 million euros. The state is participating in the project with 30 percent. The final price tag for the project should be known after the summer.

The Vantaa tram is scheduled to be completed in 2029. The tram runs from Mellunmäki in Helsinki to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport.
