England won the thriller
England are back after an exciting run at the European Under-21 Championship.
England has the best junior footballers in Europe.
The point was proven again on Saturday, when the country’s under-21 national team was crowned continental champions for the second time in a row.
Last time, Spain fell in the final and this time, Germany was left standing, so both times the opposition came from the very top of the football world.
The final in Bratislava got off to an explosive start, with goals from Harvey Elliott and Omari Hutchinson giving the Three Lions a 2-0 lead midway through the opening period.
However, Nelson Weiper started the German attack even before the half-time whistle, and Paul Nebel’s goal just after the hour mark sent the final into extra time.
The importance of the match was well illustrated by the fact that the head coaches of the A national teams of both countries had traveled to Slovakia to watch the final. The presence of Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann certainly sharpened the players’ grip.
It was best seen at the start of extra time, when England’s Tyler Morton crossed and Jonathan Rowe, who had just come on as a substitute, dived and headed the ball into the net.
England won 3–2 and thus captured their fourth U21 championship in history.
However, previous years (1982, 1984 and 2023) have not been able to repeat the trick in adult tournaments.
Head coach Tuchel hopes that the best of this team will also be present next summer to possibly celebrate World Cup gold in the USA.
