The world number one has been beaten – France has a new champion
Coco Gauff won the French Open, losing to Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
American Cori “Coco” Gauff is the new French Open tennis singles champion.
Gauff, 21, defeated Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, who is number one on the WTA list, in the women’s singles final.
Gauff is ranked second. She won the final 2–1 (6–7, 6–2, 6–4).
The winner’s prize pool for the tournament is 2.5 million euros.
The second grand slam
Gauff’s French Open victory was her first of its kind. It is the young tennis star’s second Grand Slam victory.
Gauff won her home US Open in 2023.
The reigning champion at Roland Garros was Poland’s Iga Świątek, who lost in the semifinals this time to Sabalenka.
The men’s singles final is scheduled for Sunday. The final will pit ATP number one Jannik Sinner, who recently returned from a doping ban, against defending champion Carlos Alcaraz. The match will start at 4 p.m.
