Undefeated boxing star dies at 57

Romanian Mihai Leu has died.

Romanian sports legend Mihai Leu, also known as Michael Lowe, has died at the age of 57.

According to the German newspaper Bild, Leu died in his home country after a long battle with cancer.

Leu is remembered in boxing for his exceptional career. He remained undefeated throughout his professional career, winning all 28 of his fights between 1991 and 1997, ten of which ended in knockouts.

In February 1997, Leu reached the pinnacle of his career when he defeated Panamanian Santiago Samaniego and was crowned the WBO welterweight world champion.

He successfully defended his championship in September of the same year, defeating Irishman Michael Carruth.

A hand injury in his last fight forced Leu to retire from boxing. He went down in history as one of the few European boxers to retire from professional boxing undefeated. Only Jack McAuliffe and Terry Marsh had previously achieved the same feat.

However, sports were not absent from Leu’s life. He switched to a rally car and began to fully invest in motorsports. He had made his first appearance in rallying as early as 1994.

As a rally driver, Leu competed successfully at both the national and international levels.
